Jim Thompson and James Ellroy are Gods. Everyone already knows this, but I recommend a great UK writer called David Peace. I imagine a place like this to appear in one of his crime novels (1974, 1977, 1980, 1983 are the titles). If only the BBC had expended the budget and prop expertise spent on "Life on Mars" on a serialisation of the magnificent, pungent and evil world of these novels. A cross between "The Shield", "The Sweeney" and "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer", viewed through a broken windscreen of a Ford Capri in Bradford.
